7 Natural Hyperpigmentation Remedies to Try at Home

There are plenty of natural methods to help treat your hyperpigmentation. Check out these simple at home hyperpigmentation remedies you can easily try.

So you’ve finally grown out of your acne years, but now you have a new problem: hyperpigmentation. Unless you’ve avoided sun your whole life and happen to be one of the lucky few who made it through acne-free, chances are you have some hyperpigmentation issues.

Fortunately, hyperpigmentation can be treated at home, often with items you already have sitting on your kitchen counters.

Here are seven easy natural hyperpigmentation remedies you can try at home today.

1. Drinking Water

That’s right. This is the easiest and most direct of all our hyperpigmentation remedies.

Hydration is essential to the cell repair process. If you want your skin to rejuvenate, you’ll need to drink water – and lots of it.

Make sure you are drinking at least 8 eight-ounce glasses of water per day, but we recommend more for optimal skin care.

2. Turmeric, Lemon and Honey Mask

Assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Dr. Jerome Z. Litt believes in lemon juice’s powers as one of the best hyperpigmentation remedies.

Lemon juice, he says, is not only a natural bleaching agent, but also has acidic properties that render it an effective exfoliant. Exfoliants peel away the top layer of skin to reveal the lighter, softer, smoother skin underneath.


Honey has numerous beneficial properties for our skin, too.

First, honey helps our skin retain moisture and prevents our skin from cracking, making it ideal for people with dry skin. However, because it moisturizes our skin without leaving a greasy layer behind, honey is a great moisturizer for oily skin types as well!

Honey has been included in even the world’s oldest medicine documentation for its antibacterial benefits. Because bacteria causes acne, honey can help ward off those unwanted zits. Honey’s wound healing properties can even help heal and rejuvenate skin after a breakout.

Lastly, honey is also anti-inflammatory, which helps to reduce redness and even out skin tone.


Our last ingredient, turmeric, has countless health benefits, and these benefits have landed it on our list of best hyperpigmentation remedies. It is used as an anti-inflammatory, and it’s antioxidants and anti-bacterial properties make it all the more effective for skin care.


  • 2 tbsp. honey (preferably raw Manuka honey)
  • 1 tsp. fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tsp. turmeric powder


Mix thoroughly. Apply the mixture evenly on your entire face, being careful to avoid your eyes. Leave for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing. Repeat daily.

3. DIY Apple Cider Vinegar Toner

Ah, Apple Cider Vinegar. Some might call it “the cure for everything.”

Among apple cider vinegar’s many benefits is skin care. It serves as a great astringent, minimizing pores and drying up oily skin. It is also an excellent skin lightening agent, which is how it earned its role on our list.

You will need:

  • A small spray bottle, like the travel sized ones found in a drug store or pharmacy
  • Apple cider vinegar

Note: Make sure to use raw, unfiltered organic apple cider vinegar, preferably with the “mother.” Bragg’s ACV meets the criteria, and you can find it easily in your local grocery store.


Mix one part apple cider vinegar and four parts water. Spray evenly on your entire face, making sure to avoid your eyes.

4. Fruits Rich in Vitamin C

Vitamin C helps prevent melanin production, which makes it one of our favorite hyperpigmentation remedies.

The next time you eat an orange, save the peel!

You will need:

  • 1 orange peel
  • 1 tsp. lemon juice
  • 1 tsp. milk


Dry the orange peel by placing it in the sunlight. Then, grind into powder. Mix the powder with the lemon juice and milk. Apply the mixture to your skin, and let it sit for at least twenty minutes, gently massaging it into your skin throughout. Remove with water. Repeat three times per week.

5. Yogurt and Honey Mask

We’ve already discussed honey’s magic, but let’s talk about yogurt.

Yogurt masks are particularly effective in treating hyperpigmentation resulting from sun exposure. We recommend applying this mask often and liberally after spending any large amounts of time in the sun. Its calming effects leave your skin softer and rejuvenated.

This mask is one of the easiest hyperpigmentation remedies. You might even have everything you need sitting in your kitchen right now.


  • 1 tbsp. plain unsweetened organic full fat yogurt
  • 1 tsp honey (preferably raw Manuka honey)
  • A dash of ground cinnamon
  • A dash of ground nutmeg


Mix in bowl. Do not eat – not because it won’t be delicious (it definitely will be) – but because we must dedicate it to the greater cause: your skin!

Apply to face. It may tingle.

Leave for seven to ten minutes, and then remove with warm water.

Repeat two to three times per week.

Want an added boost? Try squeezing the juice of a tomato into the mixture. Tomato acts like a natural bleaching and skin lightening agent.

6. Bentonite Clay

Bentonite Clay unclogs skin pores and shrinks them, helping to even out skin tone and texture. It also removes dead cells and impurities, in turn, conditioning and nourishing the skin. The clay leaves the skin soft and glowing.

Bentonite Clay is one of few effective hyperpigmentation remedies in the treatment of acne scarring. It removes scar tissues and allows your skin to heal. The clay can then help to rebuild skin tissue damaged from years of acne and the resulting scars.

An extra benefit?

Bentonite clay even helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles!


  • 1 tbsp. bentonite clay
  • 1-2 tbsp. distilled or boiled water
  • 1 tbsp. ground oats
  • 4 drops tea tree essential oil


Mix the bentonite clay and oats in a ball. Do not use metal utensils when working with bentonite clay.

Add the water and oil and stir until the mixture has the consistency of a spreadable paste.

Apply to the face. Leave for ten to fifteen minutes.

Remove using warm water and a washcloth.

7. Raw Potato

Raw potato contains a Vitamin B complex that has proven itself useful in skin care regimens for hyperpigmentation.

There are a few different approaches to the application of potato to the face, but here are two of our favorites.

Option #1

Cut a potato into thick slices. Sprinkle a few drops of water onto the surfaces of the slices and then rub the potato piece directly onto your skin. Continue doing this for eight to ten minutes. When you are done, wash your face with water. For best results, repeat three to four times daily for at least one month.

Option #2

Grind a potato. Press the juice from it. Mix one part potato juice with one part lemon juice. Apply the mixture to the affected skin and leave on for twenty to thirty minutes. For best results, repeat two times daily for at least one month.
