What Is Early Menopause?
The median age of women to start going through menopause is 50. Women who stop menstruating before age 40 are considered to have premature menopause.
And women who stop menstruating between the ages of 40 and 44 are considered to enter early menopause.
A recent study showed that women who got their period before age 12 and had no children were 5 times more likely to experience premature menopause.
They were also twice as likely to experience early menopause than women who got their periods after age 12 and who had 2 or more children.
And as we all know, menopause is when a woman stops producing an egg and she no longer is able to bear children.
What Are Some Causes of Early Menopause?
There is usually a health factor associated with going through menopause earlier than normal.
Here’s what some of the causes are:
- Chemotherapy and Radiation: A woman’s age will determine how much of a factor chemotherapy and radiation will play in when she’ll experience menopause. Many younger women going through these treatments experience signs of menopause that then disappear once the treatment ends.
- The use of chemotherapy and radiation may also affect the female children of women who had cancer and then gave birth after treatment.
- Autoimmune Disorders: Inflammation from such disorders as thyroid disease can cause your ovaries to stop producing earlier than normal.
- Chromosomal Defects: Certain defects like Turner Syndrome can cause a woman to go through menopause early.
- Epilepsy: It’s been shown that 14% of women with epilepsy go through early menopause over 1% of the rest of the population. Epilepsy may cause a premature ovarian failure that leads to menopause.
- Other Family Members Also Experienced Early Menopause: As usual, the answer may simply lie in your DNA. If your mother and/or your sister went through menopause early, there’s a good chance you will, too.
There are other environmental factors that may contribute to younger women experiencing menopause earlier than normal. However, the studies are too new to provide an actual data.
Another reason why a woman might experience menopause earlier than age 50 is when your ovaries are surgically removed.
What Are Signs of Early Menopause?
There are several signs that are indicative of premature menopause. There are also many factors that can contribute to the reason why menopause has begun earlier than usual.
Here are some signs you may be entering menopause earlier than expected:
- Your Menstrual Cycle Changes: The length of your cycle will begin to change. It could get longer or shorter or another change could happen. This might be difficult to notice if you’ve experienced irregular periods.
- You Start Getting Hot Flashes: At first you may attribute becoming extremely hot all of a sudden to the room feeling warm. However, these usually get worse before they get better.
- Your Mood Varies: And you thought your period made you moody! Most women experience anything from irritability to sadness to anger to anxiety. And your mood can change in a flash making relationships at home or work seem more difficult.
- You Experience Heart Palpitations: Make sure your doctor has ruled out heart disease first since it’s the number one killer of women. But heart palpitations are normal for menopausal women.
- Your Vagina Changes: Such as all of a sudden you experience vaginal dryness. Or intercourse is now painful. Or urinary incontinence starts to happen.
- Your Sex Drive Lowers: Your libido might take a hit when you start experiencing signs of menopause.
- You Experience Sleeplessness: Yet another fun symptom is difficulty sleeping.
What Can I Do To Help Ease My Early Menopausal Symptoms?
Luckily, there are steps you can take to help ease your symptoms. And most of them are holistic.
Here are some of our favorite ways to make menopause bearable:
- Eat Healthily: Eating fresh fruits and vegetables is a great way to help lower your menopausal symptoms. You’ll also be able to maintain your weight and look younger by making healthy food choices.
- Pueraria Mirifica plant found in Myanmar and Thailand is known to help reduce hot flashes, increase vaginal moisture, fights aging, improves skin, and can help in weight loss.
- Exercise: Fluctuating estrogen levels will make you hold onto unwanted fat. So exercising regularly is vitally important. When you exercise you’ll reduce the fat that upsets the estrogen and progesterone ratios.
- Decrease your Stress: By the time most women enter the menopausal stage, our lives are busy. And stressful. It’s important to take measures to help reduce your stress levels.
